Forget procrastination with the 30 minute on 10 minute off rule

Updated: Apr 27

Procrastination feels good but isn't effective in any way, it's hard to brea the habit but here are some tips to say goodbye to the P word..

How do we stop this? Try the 5 second rule by Mel robbins, you quite literally count down from 5,4,3,2,1 and GO, you do it, don't give your brain enough time to reconsider. There are other technique into eliminating procrastination, the 30/10 minute rule by Sam Neame.

So why and how do we start to procrastinate? It seems as soon as we start it never ends, we get consumed into everything which isn't to do with what we should be doing. Part of this is because we lose momentum, think about a really heavy boulder, when it isn't moving it takes a lot of force to get it going, however, once it gets momentum it becomes powerful and doesn't stop.

Surely we all love a reward, think about it, why do most people work? To be rewarded financially or mentally, because it feels good. Why do we buy cakes.. again, as a reward? We are programmed from an early age to work for a reward and there's nothing wrong with that. Which is why Sam's 30/10 rule works, we do 30 minutes of intense work and reward ourselves 10 minutes free time to do whatever we like. This means there is a clear structure and also reward system.

The 4 simple steps of the 30/10 rule

  • Step 1 : Choose your task/job

  • Step 2 : Set a timer for 30 minutes

  • Step 3 : Work until 30 minutes is over

  • Step 4 : Enjoy 10 minutes of you time

Changed mindset

The reason these small hacks and habits work is because they can be applied to everything. When it comes to slacking off a task, we are training our mind that it's ok, we are letting our body know it's not important. Let's say you have a gym class booked, you get to the gym and convince yourself you're too tired, well this will occur again and not only at your gym session, it will occur potentially at work. Bad habits lead to missing out on opportunities and discovering more about yourself so it's important to give it a go.

The more often we follow something the more it gets stuck in our brains and it becomes automatic, after a week or 2 you may not even know it's happening, which is an incredible step moving forward.

Rewards
